The Feast

The Exit of the Procession.

The feast, which is celebrated from the 30th July to 15th August, is a mixture of Religious and profane celebrations. The 30th July is called 'Kwindicina' from the Italian word 'quindici' a fortnight. The statue is taken out of its niche and put in a prominent place in church.A high Mass is celebrated. All members of the Society are invited to attend. Afterwards there's a big open air get-together called Kwindicina Fest, in the village square with good food and a variety of entertainment.
During the following week, each day is dedicated to a different section of Qrendi society, with a special Mass, e.g. Religious Groups Day, Altar Boys Day when they renew their promises, Aged and Handicapped Day, when the Sacrament of Extreme Unction is given, Children's Day, which is followed by a talent show, Family Day for those who have their 50th, 25th, 10th Wedding Anniversaries, Word of God Day, Religious Orders Day and Renewal of Faith Day where new babies are Baptised.
On the 9th August, the statue of Our Lady is taken out to the church door to celebrate the beginning of the feast.  Daily band marches start on this day to the 15th, where guest bands from other villages take part besides our local band. These are enhanced by fireworks demonstrations and displays.

The Band has a vital part in the Feast

On the 10th August a vocal and instrumental concert takes place in the square, which is contributing to the our young generation getting to hear classical music played by our own band and guest soprano. The 11th, 12th, and 13th are 'Tridu" days, where there's a high mass, in which an orchestra and tenors take part and a special preacher comes from outside the parish to make an oration. The 14th is the eve of the feast. After the morning mass 'Te Deum' is sung to thank the lord for the end of 'Tridu' accompanied by sounds of variable mortars. In the afternoon a small procession called 'Translation' takes place round a small part of Qrendi, with the saint's relic carried by an important Monsigneur of the church and accompanied by fireworks.

Later there's the 'Atifona' orchestral music which is followed by a high mass by the same Monsigneur.
Late at night there's a huge display of air and ground fireworks.
On the Feast Day there's a special Mass with a sermon called 'Panigierku' which depicts the life of the saint. At noon there's a big, colourful band march around the village with a lot of dancing and singing, full of colourful balloons and enjoyment.
The clou of the feast is at about 7pm when a solemn procession with the statue takes place arond the whole village, accompanied by fireworks and hymns to the Saint played by two guest bands.
