Youth Section History of The Society of Santa Maria Qrendi
At the general assembly of the 24th February 1951, which was at 8.00p.m, the President Francis Bugeja suggested that they nominate “those youths who attended and wanted to be present at the Committee Meetings” to be trained as leaders of the future. These youths were Michael Axiaq, Peter Schembri, John Magro and Carmel Bezzina. This was the first time that a group of youths were called to help in the Society. As a matter of fact at the meeting of 1st March 1951 Michael Axiaq was proposed to train with the Treasurer, John Magro was asked to train with the secretary and Carmel Bezzina was to be with the representatives of the Band.
It was written recently, in the beginning of 1993, that the Central Committee found it necessary to organize the youths who were active in the Society, so the Youth Section was born, which consisted of John Spiteri as delegate of the central committee, Colin Psaila, Mario Zerafa, Rosmar Farrugia, Martin Callus and Donio Darmanin.
The enthusiasm which these youths had led to painting and restoring the arms, helping in painting the masts, and made new ivy for Parish Street. They organized the Sunday collection of funds, lotteries and billiard leagues. This Section consisted of twenty members by June of 1993. This was the beginning of the first Youth Section in Qrendi
The new committee of the Youth Section 2009 was elected on Friday 9th January 2009. The enthusiasm which captured this section when it was first founded was reflected in the fourteen youths who form part of this section.
Immediately the Sunday Collection and other lotteries continued. A Carnival party was organized for the children with the participation of Kalminu and Bwirinu, (two elves created at Christmas on Radio 15ta’ Awissu) who are so popular with the Qrendi children. At the party which was in the hall of Palazz Marija Assunta, the Youth Section organized several games for the children and also for the parents. Apart from this several youths can be found daily at the decorations store/workshop to restore decorations and paint masts. Last but not least they are presenters and disk jockeys on Radio 15ta’ Awissu.
