The sculptor Antonio Chircop (1748-1869) made his best work in the year 1837 when he made the Trinity of Senglea and the statue of the Assumption of Qrendi which is taken out every year on the 15th August, in a procession. This is a unique statue, sculpted in wood, the form of the hands, the clothes and the angels are all unique. He was influenced by no other existing statues as was the usual practise in those days. Some changes were made afterwards by Francesco Sciortino (1875-1958), in 1910 the clouds were made of silver.
It was redecorated in gold in 1945 and was triumphantly brought back from Valletta to Qrendi on foot (six miles). It was accompanied by the band which was making its debut programme. It is made from a solid trunk and is very very heavy to carry. The four bouquets were made by Manuel Sciberras in 1977 as was the garland of flowers under the clouds.
In 2011 another restoration took place by Recoup Architecture & Fine Arts by a method called reversible where no drastic intervention happens.
